The Word Superiority Effect: Letters Are Recognised Better in Words

In the word superiority effect a briefly presented letter is identified more accurately when it appears within a real word than when it appears alone or within a random letter string. The advantage shows that knowledge of whole words feeds back to support letter perception. Interactive activation models explain it by letting word-level units send activation down to the letter units they contain.
