The Wound Current and Voltage Gradient That Follow an Amputation

Breaking an epithelium short-circuits it. Ion flow out of the wound sets up a measurable current and a voltage gradient across the stump that lasts hours to days. In animals that regrow limbs this gradient has a characteristic shape and time course, and flattening it pharmacologically impairs regrowth.
