Toyota Power Split Device

A single planetary gearset connects the engine (carrier), generator MG1 (sun), and traction motor MG2 plus the wheels (ring), splitting engine power between mechanical drive and electrical generation — an eCVT with no clutches or shifting. During braking, the wheels back-drive MG2 through the ring gear, which is what makes regen possible.
