Tracking AI Referral Traffic with a Custom Channel Group in Answer Engine Optimization
Measuring answer engine optimization relies on triangulating three incomplete signals because AI platforms expose little of the impression and ranking data available in traditional search: AI referral traffic, isolated in analytics by grouping known AI referrer sources into a dedicated channel; AI bot crawl activity; and self-reported attribution. Referral data is a systematic undercount because many AI surfaces strip referrer information, so it indicates direction and relative trends rather than precise volume.
