Triglyceride Breakdown and Synthesis in Lipid Metabolism

This concept covers the enzymatic pathways of triglyceride breakdown (lipolysis) and synthesis (lipogenesis) within lipid metabolism biochemistry, describing how fats are catabolized by sequential lipase action into glycerol and fatty acids, and conversely synthesized from glycerol-3-phosphate through sequential acyltransferase and phosphatase reactions via the intermediate phosphatidic acid. It also establishes the structural basis for the fat/oil distinction—the degree of fatty acid saturation—linking molecular composition to physical state at room temperature.
