Types of Matter - Elements, Compounds, Mixtures, and Pure Substances

Matter is classified within chemistry into four fundamental categories: pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous). Pure substances consist exclusively of a single type of element or multiple elements chemically bonded in fixed ratios, whereas mixtures involve the physical combination of two or more distinct pure substances with variable composition. This hierarchical taxonomy distinguishes chemical identity based on uniformity of composition and separability by physical means.
