UAV Avionics Systems: Architecture, Classification, and Integration

A survey of the avionics subsystems onboard Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) and how they integrate to accomplish missions safely. Covers the role and taxonomy of each subsystem with the benefits and shortcomings of competing alternatives: communication systems, antennas and location tracking; identification/interrogation-response systems; classical and innovative power sources; multi-sensor perception; autonomous navigation and control; path planning and obstacle/collision avoidance; and trajectory/tracking control. Also treats electronic-warfare threats and countermeasures, UAV safety occurrences within national regulatory and certification frameworks, and databus communication standards for real-time data transfer, distinguishing fixed-wing from rotary-wing platforms as application-dependent.
