Virchow's triangle explains why blood clots form inside blood vessels (thrombosis) and who is at risk. It says every cause of thrombosis falls into three groups: endothelial injury (damage to the vessel lining), abnormal blood flow, and hypercoagulability (blood that clots too easily). Doctors use it to sort risk factors such as long bed rest, atrial fibrillation, surgery, cancer, and inherited clotting defects.
