Visual Search: Feature Pop-Out versus Serial Conjunction Search

In visual search a participant looks for a target among distractors and the display size varies. When the target differs by a single feature it pops out and reaction time barely changes with set size; when it is defined by a conjunction of features, or by a letter among similar letters, reaction time grows with each added item. The slope of reaction time against set size distinguishes parallel from serial, attention-demanding search.
