Writing Linear Systems of Differential Equations in Matrix Form

Writing a linear system of differential equations in matrix form lets you solve several linked equations at once as one vector equation. It is used when two quantities change together, such as predator and prey populations. A second-order equation can be turned into a first-order system by adding a new variable, and the resulting matrix is called the companion matrix.
