Express is a small library that turns a Node program into a web server: you create an app, tell it which function should run for which method and path, and tell it which port to listen on. A route is that pairing, and inside a route you read the request and call something like res.status(201).json(...) to answer. Without a framework like this you would be parsing raw request text by hand for every single address your app answers.
