Zero-Based Array Indexing in Programming

Elements of an array in most programming languages are addressed by a position count that starts at 0, so the first element is index 0 and the last is one less than the length. A learner afterwards can name the index of any element of an array and convert between a 1-based position and the 0-based index used in code.
