About Reading Mass Spectra: From m/z Peaks to Molecular Structure

You will learn to take a raw mass spectrum and work it back to a molecule. Starting from what the x-axis actually measures, you will identify the molecular ion, count carbons and halogens from isotope patterns, apply the nitrogen rule and rings-plus-double-bonds to constrain formulas, and rationalize fragments through alpha cleavage, McLafferty rearrangement, and characteristic neutral losses. You will then interpret accurate-mass data to assign a molecular formula, read multiply charged electrospray envelopes and deconvolute them, and interpret MS/MS product-ion spectra from GC-MS and LC-MS runs where retention time is a second dimension of evidence.
